As parents, we're always mindful of how our children are influenced by the way we think, speak and behave. They're very much a reflection of us in terms of our values and beliefs and a snapshot of how we go about our lives. This is why it is so important to encourage sustainable and green living in our kids at an early age. Instilling the ideas and principles early on leads to concrete behaviors that will stick with them for the rest of their lives, benefitting not only them but also future generations to come.

Parenting is tough work, even without the added pressure of encouraging your children to live sustainable lives. You might be wondering what's most important, what do they need to know and where do you start? To help make things as simple as possible, we've put together a list of five key principles that can be introduced at any age!

1. Value is more important than cost

In today's society most things have a price but not everyone knows how to place value. Teach this to your kids early on by helping them decide the people, places and things in their life that they appreciate the most and why.

2. Bigger and newer does not equate to better

This applies to more than just things, old friends are just as wonderful as new. We only have to take a look at our landfills to realize that we live in a disposable society. Repair, don't replace. Make, don't buy. Embrace quality over quantity, price and size and your children will follow in your footsteps.

3. Less is more

Overconsumption is not sustainable, not right now and certainly not in the future. Make sure that your kids understand this by teaching them how to make the most of what they already have.

4. Living green is cost effective too

The idea that living green is expensive is more of a myth than a reality. Sure environmentally friendly products can be more expensive, but you spend less overall. Teach your kids to recycle, let them accompany you to the bottle depot and use the profits as their allowance. This will go a long way in helping them appreciate the value of a dollar too.

5. It's never too late to make a difference

If you're not already living a sustainable lifestyle there is no better time to start than now. Every bit of effort will make all the difference on our environment and the effects will show for this generation and the next. Get started today.
