Whether you're breastfeeding, or bottle feeding, eventually your baby will be transitioning to solid foods, there are a wide variety of baby feeding products available to help make feeding time more convenient and enjoyable for the whole family.

Are you shopping for sippy cups, bottles, plates and utensils that are free of non-toxic chemicals?

Our Recommendations for Non-Toxic Feeding

Going green with your baby feeding products means different things to different people. To some it means making sure none of the plastic serving or storage products contain leaching toxins (such as BPA or Formaldehyde) that could potentially impact your child's health. Others take it a step further to find the most reusable, longest lasting materials to feed their babies.

Flame retardant chemicals appeared in the majority of baby products that scientists tested in a recent study, including car seats, nursing pillows, changing pads, baby carriers and rocking chairs.

There is often no such thing as absolute zero due to cross-contamination and prevalence of many substances in the natural environment, Health Canada told CBC News in an email.

The FDA cannot require companies to test products for safety before they are sold, does not systematically review the safety of ingredients and does not set limits for common, harmful contaminants in products. The FDA also does not require contaminants to be listed on product ingredient labels. As a result, consumers have no way of knowing if their products contain toxic contaminants.

In the meantime, Stapleton recommended that parents look for baby products made with polyester or other materials instead of polyurethane foam. And if a product's label says that it conforms to Technical Bulletin 117 (TB117) as declared by the California Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation, don't buy it, she said. That's a sure sign that it contains toxic chemicals that could threaten the health of your baby.

However, if you have a little one transitioning in their feeding habits, you have enough to be concerned about i.e. what is actually going in their tummy. That's why we've reviewed several baby feeding products and narrowed down the list to our favorites. I hope you find it helpful.

Spoons: There are several kinds of spoons to buy for your baby, but a good spoon should be easy for the baby to hold in her/his hand. It should also have a larger head and shaft than a regular spoon.

Non-toxic Material Choices: BPA Free, Latex Free, Phthalate Free

Keep baby clean, comfortable, and pacified

Stock up on other essential items for feeding and comforting baby
Baby bibs: Keep milk, formula, and baby food off baby's clothes with a stylish baby bib
Burp Cloths: Burp your baby after each bottle feeding and keep a supply of burp cloths handy
Feeding pillows: Use an angled or contoured feeding pillow to hold your baby at the right height and position for feeding
Pacifiers: The sucking motion provided by a pacifier often soothes fussy babies. Orthodontic models are now available

Minimizing the Mess

Of course, with all these feedings there is sure to be lots of spitting up, spills and a mess for you to clean. Burp cloths for you and bibs for baby should do the trick to help minimize the mess! You will need a lot, and remember to pack some in your diaper bag too.

Safety Tips

Never try to warm formula in the microwave; it may heat unevenly and parts could scald baby
Do not let baby fall asleep with the bottle, as formula accumulation in the mouth may lead to teeth decay
Do not prop the bottle when feeding baby, as it may cause choking. Always hold baby in a semi-upright position and angle the bottle accordingly
Do not pour overheated liquid into a plastic liner, as it can burst
Feed baby formula or expressed breast milk only at room temperature.

Along with a crib, car seat, and stroller, a highchair will be one of the most frequently used items in your collection of essential baby gear. Beginning with the introduction of solid foods around 4 to 6 months of age, your growing baby will likely be spending a great deal of time poking at, tasting, tossing, smearing, spitting out, and occasionally eating three or more meals a day -- all while seated on a highly specialized dining throne.

When one considers that there are 365 days in a year, and that the average highchair may be used for a period of up to three years, it becomes clear that this extremely practical piece of equipment will play an important role in baby's day-to-day life. Parents need to assess the many different models, features, and styles that are offered before selecting the highchair that will best suit their child's needs.

As with any piece of baby equipment that will be used on a regular basis, safety should be high on the list of considerations when shopping for a highchair. But there are several other things to consider when selecting a highchair: the comfort for baby; the ease and convenience of cleaning the chair and adjusting its components; ease of assembly; size, color, and style; and finally, the cost. Following are some of the important features that should be considered.

You should also contact the manufacturer of the high chair for additional safe use information.

Select other feeding essentials:

When baby starts solid foods, you'll need to buy baby utensils, sippy cups, dishes, and baby spoons in addition to your high chair. To be sure you know what's in your child's diet, you may also choose to make your own baby food with a food grinder.

Graduate to a booster chair.

When your baby is walking and too big for a high chair, a booster chair makes it easy for them to sit at the table with you.

Hook-on and Booster Seats

An alternative to the upright highchair, hook-on chairs and booster seats can provide a convenient way to feed your baby or toddler at home or on the go. These lower-cost options take up less space than a full-sized highchair and can be easily thrown in a car for outings. Portable hook-on chairs should have a strong clamp-on device that keeps the chair level and securely in place and should only be used on a table that has been tested for sturdiness and stability.

Often equipped with simple lap restraints to keep baby in place, booster seats and feeding seats can be placed directly on top of dining room chairs to give larger babies or toddlers who may be outgrowing their standard highchair a more comfortable and secure seat at the table.

NOTE: The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) also tests and certifies many baby products. If the JPMA seal is on the item, you can be sure it has passed stability and safety tests.
