The word diaper was originally used in 19th century England to refer to quilted cloth with repeated geometric shapes. This is what cloth diapers (or nappies, if you're in Britain), were made out of at that time in history. Since diapers were made out of this diapered cloth, it was fairly easy to just start calling them diapers. In the 1950's, Mrs. Hellerman - the owner of a Milwaukee diaper service - came to the Kendall Company (they made Curity brand diapers), with her new invention. A fold to put extra cotton layers down the center of the diaper, making it the perfect size for most babies. Once the fold was sewn shut, the prefolded diaper was born.

Disposable diapers were invented by the Swedish paper company Paulistr in 1942. The first disposable diapers were made from unbleached, creped cellulose tissue cover with pull-on rubber pants. Disposable diapers continued to evolve, when in 1946 a housewife invented a waterproof covering for these diapers. This covering was called a boater and used four snaps to replace safety pins. In the early 1950s, chemical engineer Victor Mills invented the first real disposable diaper. Victor Mills worked at Proctor & Gamble at the time. Using his grandchildren as test subjects, Pampers were born.
