Parents have so many added responsibilities during the holidays that we are sometimes less than patient with our children. The Kids' Project wants to remind parents that children deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Remember that children have limits...

If you are shopping with children, please be alert to their needs: are they getting tired, hungry, over-excited by the noise and confusion, or simply in need of fresh air and exercise, or a hug from you?

Children are naturally curious...

Please remember that children are naturally curious; this is how they learn about the world. If they want to examine an attractive item, please don't scold them for their curiosity.

It might help to say, That is nice, isn't it? Take a good look and when we get home, we'll add it to your wish list.

If you reach your limit...

If you reach your limit, try to show by example, positive ways of handling anger. You might try saying, I feel angry and embarrassed when this happens in a store. Let's go outside for a few minutes so we can both cool off.

A few minutes of fresh air can make a big difference to both parent and child.

If your children reach their limit...

If your children reach their limit, please respect that. Shopping can wait; you can put off anything but love.

All children behave as well as they are treated. The best gifts you can give your child this Holiday Season are your time, undivided attention, patience and understanding.
